The Hudson River Museum Amphitheater is conceived of as cultural and educational gathering place for its local community. Seating 400 people, it is supportive of the diverse Yonkers independent music scene, including small music groups such as zydeco, and popular music groups such as funk, jazz and rock; it hosts special community events and recitals; film screenings including HRM's Film Program; performance, including puppetry and pageants; school events, picnics, graduations, one act plays, Greek tragedies; and outdoor astronomical viewing associated with the HRM’s Planetarium programming.
The Hudson River Museum Amphitheater is connected physically and aesthetically with the existing Museum building, a 1969 Brutalist concrete architectural design by Sherwood, Mills & Smith Architects, and nestled into the highlands sloping down to the Hudson River, with the New Jersey Palisades as a backdrop for its bandshell. This outdoor theater is merged into its naturally sloping site with radial geometry like a Greek amphitheater, and with solid cast-in-place concrete, instead of marble, in keeping with the existing brutalist concrete Museum building. The stepped concrete seating follows the natural grade and provides a flexible variety of seating and lounging possibilities. This facilitates a relaxed and customizable audience layout suitable for the summer-festival aspect and timetable of its programming. And with the assistance of Fisher Dachs Associates, the technical sophistication of a Broadway theater has been merged with the simplicity of a high school auditorium.
